TRYING
Rain battered against the window, like small raging beast trying to enter the car. Brad stared out at the sea of rain, unable to see much due to the white fog caused by the rain. His father was at the wheel driving, and his mother was equally quiet. Brad felt cold, and he was unsure if it was because of the rain or the air conditioner. He was on the way to visit his brother Ryan in the hospital, as he had been recently involved in an accident. His brother’s condition was unstable, and doctors were still operating. Brad looked at the columns of rain illuminated by the passing headlights and street lamps, and his sight slowly faded into his thoughts.
He could still remember sitting in the living room, as a policeman sat there on the couch, telling his family about what had happened. He could picture what had happened that day.
That day, Ryan had woken up late that day, and was rushing through his morning routine, as he would not want to stay back for detention. He had just finished his breakfast, when just four kilometers away, a man named James was lurking behind a pillar at a deserted void deck. James had been rather short of cash, and was desperate to get some free cash to pay of his gambling debt. He peered through the side of the pillar at an old lady not far away, walking towards him, holding an expensive branded handbag. He waited for her to be walking past him, an unsuspecting victim, and he ran out and snatched her handbag.
It was the worst timing James could have chosen. Jack, a policeman, was just walking not too far behind him, heading for the nearby hawker centre to eat. He managed to witness James carrying out his crime, and immediately chased after James. James was shocked at how fast his act was found out, and panicking, he started to run as fast as he could. He chose to run through a crowded market, hoping that the heavy crowd would be able to make Jack lose him. James pushed his legs to their limits, and his mind was racing with thoughts on what would happen if he was caught. He had not expected anyone to be witnessing what he had done.
Wind whistled in his ears as Jack ran towards the thief. His eyes were set on his prey, and he would not be stopping unless he had caught it. James had been rather evasive, but Jack was sure he could never run forever; nobody could. James had pushed many people and things down, trying to hinder Jack on gaining ground, but Jack calmly moved over the obstacles, with a clear path and plan formed in his mind. He was waiting for James to make a mistake, and that was when he would make his move.
James was starting to tremble in his legs, partly because of exhaustion, and also of fear. The policeman was gaining on him, and he was running in an open field behind the market, probably the worst place he could be in. Jack had a clear sight of him, and would easily catch up with little obstacles in the way. James was at his wits end. He had nowhere to go, no place to hide. Something blue nearby caught his eye, and he was finally in luck.
A man just arrived in his new blue motorbike, and was just getting off when he was rudely knocked to the ground. For a few seconds, he could not see a thing as dust got in his eyes, but he could not mistake the sound of his brand new motorbike taking off.
James rode off in the motorbike, looking back at the policemen running behind him. It was the greatest mistake of his life.
From a distance, Ryan saw the green traffic light starting to blink. It would be his last chance to cross the road, and he rushed towards it. He only managed five steps when something that felt like a bull crashed into his side. All he felt was pain, agony, and then nothing. He had fainted in less than a minute.
Brad was jolted from his thoughts when the car reversed into a parking lot. He was surprised upon how fast they had arrived. They went up to the hospital, and went to see Ryan.
While sitting beside him, Brad was thinking about how all these events had happened. The thief was trying to earn some money to repay to debt, which caused him to go to such extreme measures to get the money. The policeman was trying to catch the thief, thus he had chased him for such a long time, even when he was on the motorbike. Ryan was trying to get to school on time, which caused him to take his eyes off his surroundings. It was a tragic chain of events, which happened because all of them were trying.
